Goa Institute of Management to conduct training program for management teachers

Goa Institute of Management (GIM)along with the Centre for Management of Innovation and Technology of the International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi will be organizing a unique three day training program for teachers and faculty members on Interfacing Social Sciences with Management Education at the GIM campus in Goa. The objective of this program is to develop awareness and sensitize teachers of management toa host of issues relating to management and society so as to enable them to not only make curriculum changes but also implement them.Scheduled to commence from the 16th of September, the three day training session will emphasize upon the need to integrate social sciences with management education and will be a platform for educational professionals and experts to debate on issues related to business ethics, human values and their impact of economy, conflict management and the role of institutions in working towards people-oriented development, among others.

Since the early years of independence, our country has discussed and debated on social issues plaguing the population, be it poverty, empowerment, access to a decent quality of life, equal opportunity etc, howeverthe articulation of what needs to be done to make a positive impact does notfind direct expression in the educational preparation of mangers. Management education is concerned primarily with imparting knowledge and skills related to the subject matter but not as much with preparing individuals with a sufficient understanding of the social context in which they would practice their profession. The corporate world does not need merely intelligent professionals, but it requires sensitive socially conscious managers. GIM has, through the initiatives it supports, consistently laid emphasis on values which positively impact society while inculcating positive values and business ethics in its students. This training programme follows close on the heels of Samriddhi – a seminar on social entrepreneurship.

The training program is organized with a view to develop an understanding among teachers and faculty members regarding various issues related to management and society, and to bring about a change in the curriculum which can then be implemented by them. The objective of the program is to discuss the relationship between corporate management and society, identify behavioral strengths and weakness of managers and people/groups they interact with and suggest how managers can improve the ethical standards in the working of individuals, organizations and the society.

The three day interactive session will include participation from IIMs, IITs, NITs, and otherstate/central funded institutions, universities and AICTE approved institutions. This training program encompasses a wide range of study areas right from developing awareness of the socio-economic scenario and the relationship between corporate management and society, to the role, functions and effectiveness of managers in understanding people and enhancing the ethical standards of the organization. It will include lectures by eminent experts who will share their expertise and perceptions with the participants. Key facilitators include, Prof. Ashok Chandra of IMI Delhi, Dr. Rajen Mehrotra, Chief Knowledge Officer at ACC Ltd,Dr. Janki Andharia of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai , Dr. Nina Jacob and Prof. RajeevKumar of GIM, and Prof. Sree Kumar of Goa University. The participants will be able to hold discussions in groups and towards the end will make presentations of their group’s recommendations on the structure and contents of curriculum that they would introduce in their institution.

The three day program is financially backed by the Technology Management Programme Division,Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.
