The new points-based visa system for students announced last week will place additional responsibilities on UK institutions, but should be invisible to foreign students in the short term, according to leading provider of international education, Study Group.
James Pitman, Managing Director, Study Group, comments “For the vast majority of international students wanting to study in Britain, the application process under the tier-4 system will barely change. It is the institutions which will be required to issue certificates of sponsorship and keep better tabs on students when they arrive so as to report non-enrolment and prolonged absenteeism.”

The Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP), a higher education think tank based in Washington, DC, has released a new study comprehensively examining North Carolina’s higher education system, concluding that the Tar Heel state might not be getting much for its money in higher education and that the money itself is not being spent wisely.
The report, “North Carolina’s Higher Education System: Success or Failure?” draws upon data from the Department of Education, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau, and other education sources to assess North Carolina’s colleges and universities. Because the digital media landscape is expanding and evolving rapidly, so, too, must the approach and
focus of technology schools. Fields of study which used to address a specialized, niche area of digital arts now are part of billion-dollar industries. Nearly every company in America is looking for ways to
incorporate interactivity into its online presence. As a result, the number of students majoring in creative technology fields has skyrocketed in recent years.
In a move compelled by double-digit growth in digital filmmaking and computer gaming fields - disciplines just emerging into full-fledged schools and gaining recognition in higher education - DePaul University will be introducing its newest college this week to replace the former School of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems.

American high schools are in a state of crisis. So says the report issued this week from the Education Research Center and supported by both the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and America’s Promise Alliance. It is the same message heard three years ago from the Gates Foundation in their report The Silent Epidemic. Thirty percent of students entering high school don’t graduate, and in large cities the failure to graduate reaches 48 percent.
The Silent Epidemic report stated that a majority of the students who fail to graduate had grades of C or better. Nearly 50 percent of these students said that class was not interesting and that they were bored and disengaged. Of those that left for personal reasons, 32 percent had to get a job, 26 percent became parents and 22 percent had to care for a family member.
