Indian University of Petroleum and Energy Studies Signs MOU with Canadian institutions

University of Petroleum & Energy Studies has taken a step forward and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with University of Waterloo, Canada and the Centennial Energy Institute (CEI), for Scientific Research and Educational Cooperation with UPES. Both institutions will encourage institutional facilitated contact and cooperation between their students, faculty members, departments and research institutes under provisions of this Memorandum with UPES.

University of Waterloo and UPES have current areas of specialization and the expertise at the two institutions; the institutions have extended their cooperation to each other within the scope of the agreement which comprises of three major elements,

Biomedical Research Career Programme

The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to the following : (i) Implementation of the programme for instituting a suite of DBT-Wellcome Trust Fellowships at a total cost of Rs.1296 crores with DBT and Wellcome Trust contributing equal sums of Rs.648 crores each, over a period of 10 years commencing 2008-09;

(ii) DBT, incurring an expenditure of Rs.240.059 crores in implementation of the programme during the remaining four years (2008-09 to 2011 -2012) of the XI Plan period:

Stone of Guru Granth Sahib varsity laid

The stage has been set for the establishment of the first-ever university in the name of a holy book, with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today laying the foundation stone of Guru Granth Sahib World University here.

The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Fourth Centenary Memorial Trust will manage the university, which will come up near the historic Fatehgarh Sahib Gurdwara. The 11-member trust is headed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbadhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar and includes Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, state Advocate-General H.S. Mattewal, former chief secretary R.S.Mann, four SGPC members, including Bibi Kiranjot Kaur and Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia (as its secretary), besides others.

PM lays foundation stone of Jorhat Medical College

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has laid the foundation stone of Jorhat Medical College at Jorhat in Assam today. He also flagged off a Mobile Medical Unit. Following is the text of the Prime Minister’s address on the occasion :

“I am very happy to be here today at Jorhat, this ancient city of learning and administration in Assam. It is also the district that has the highest literacy rate among all the districts of the State. I take pride in laying the foundation stone of the Jorhat Medical College in this seat of learning and scholarship in Assam.

Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan innagurated

Minister of State for Higher Education, has inaugurated IIT, Rajasthan at the Campus of IIT, Kanpur today. In the address the minister said that the idea of IIT as an Institution of excellence has long been embedded the consciousness of India’s educated classes. The minister mentioned that “The U.S. television network CBS recently featured the IITs in its widely watched news programme, “60 Minutes”, as “the most important university you’ve ever heard of.” The show’s co-host, Leslie Stahl, observed: “Put Harvard, MIT and Princeton together and you begin to get an idea of the status of this school in India.”

IIMB Launches One-Year Full-Time Post Graduate Programme in Management

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), a centre of excellence in management, recognized as one of the top 100 management schools in the world, today announced plans for a One-year Full-time Post Graduate Programme in Management, commencing April 1, 2009.

Aimed at mid-career executives aspiring towards leadership roles, the programme differs significantly from the two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP). For example, the programme would be inter-disciplinary in nature (as opposed to the functional one used for the PGP). Pedagogy used will be interactive, and focus on learning from peers.

Zee Business Best B School Survey ranks IIPM as No1 B-School in India

Extenuating its spirited campaign ‘Dare To Think Beyond the IIMs’, the Indian Institute of Planning & Management (IIPM) surpassed the performance of all the IIMs to be rated as the No 1 business school in India for the extensive ‘Global Exposure’ it provides to its students, followed by IIM (A) and IIM (B) at rank 2 and rank 3 respectively. The ranking was conducted by ‘Zee Business Best B School Survey’, a first of its kind on Indian television in association with leading international research firm Synovate. IIPM also achieved Rank 7 (ahead of 2 IIMs) as the Best B School overall, Rank 8 for Best Industry Interface, Rank 9 for Best Placements (ahead of 1 of the IIMs) and Rank 9 for Best Course Content.

Sheffield Hallam University Announces India Scholarships and Joint Ventures

To celebrate the launch of the Sheffield Hallam University India Office in July 2008, the University announced one full tuition fee scholarship to an Indian applicant for a 2008/09 postgraduate course. Mr Y Siva Sankar has been selected for the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship. Siva Sankar will do MA in International Broadcast Journalism at the Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University has twenty six scholarships for Indian students ranging from an amount of GBP 1000 to GBP 3000, and two full scholarships. Also, one of the SHU current students is an awardee of the British Council Chevening Scholarship.

Corporates join to induct the new batch at ICFP

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is now deemed to be a university

As per a proposal from Department of Space for conferment of status of ‘Deemed-to-be-University’, under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, to ‘Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology’ being set up at that point of time under the aegis of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) near Thiruvananthapuram in the State of Kerala. Now its been declared that Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IISST) Thiruvanathapuram shall be deemed to be a university, under de novo category, for the purposes of the aforesaid Act, provisionally for a period of five years, with immediate effect, subject to the centain conditions.

Indian institute of Carpet Technology and Craft Development Institute inaugurated

The Indian Institute of Carpet Technology and Craft Development Institute were innagurated in Srinagar today. The two Institutions have been constructed at a cost of Rs. 9 crore and Rs. 5.30 crore respectively.

The State produces handicrafts worth Rs. 1600 crore and the handicraft items worth 1400 crore rupees are exported to other countries every year.
